Bossier City Police Chief Mike Halphen says police arrested a man early this morning after the man assaulted his wife and then barricaded himself inside his home. Derrick Kendall Stein, 39, was arrested on charges of domestic abuse battery and resisting an officer following a standoff with police that lasted four and a half hours at his home in the 1500 block of Fury Place.
Officers were called to the scene at approximately 3:30 a.m. after Stein's wife contacted Bossier City police saying Stein had assaulted her inside their home and threatened to harm himself. She and her three children, ages 8, 7 and 2, fled to a neighbor's house while Stein barricaded himself inside the home. Officers were informed that Stein kept numerous firearms in the house.
Chief Halphen says officers immediately surrounded the house while the SWAT team was activated along with the department's Hazardous Duty Robot. In the meantime, two homes on either side of Stein's house were evacuated as a precaution. Officers attempted to contact Stein by telephone but were unsuccessful. They then deployed the robot to the home's front door and attempted to talk with him by using the robot's remote two-way communications system, but he refused to comply with their commands.
SWAT officers then forced the front door open allowing the robot to enter the home. Police continued to use the robot to make verbal contact with Stein but he continued to ignore their commands at which time the SWAT team deployed tear gas inside the house. Stein then immediately came out of the house and was taken into custody without further incident.
Bossier City Fire Department personnel took Stein's wife to Willis-Knighton Bossier and treated for a minor injury that she sustained in the assault. She was released a short time later.
