When some Bossier City firefighters are not answering calls for service this week, they'll on the job saving Bossier City taxpayer dollars.
Several firefighters will set aside their bunker gear in exchange for construction tools when they begin work framing a storage room at the Bossier City Public Safety Training Complex as part of a planned expansion project. The training complex is located at 5850 Shed Road. The firefighters, many of whom work part-time as certified construction workers, will assemble the frame work themselves thus saving the city an estimated $20,000 in costs. While the work is being done, the firefighters will still be subject to respond to calls for service.
Fire Chief Brad Zagone approached the firefighters about the idea as a way to save tax dollars and each agreed to do the work which will be done during their regular duty hours.
The framing work is just one of a few cost saving jobs Bossier City firefighters are conducting. Other projects include fence replacement at two fire stations and work to clear brush from the site of a proposed fire station.
These projects, including the work on the training center storage room, will save an estimated $30,000 and also give the firefighters a sense of pride in doing the work themselves on facilities that they will utilize in the performance of their duties.
